MotorTrend spoke with Mike Koval, Ram Chief. He stated that the brand is aware that the midsize truck market is very popular and growing. He stated that Ram must be a major player in this market. Although we don’t have much information about the Ram midsize truck, it is clear that Ram knows they must be a major player in that market. It’s likely to be one the eight new vehicles that will be available in the coming years. Koval confirmed that the STLA Frame platform which combines electrification and a body-on-frame design is too big for a midsize pickup.
Stellantis has the JT architecture in their possession, which supports the Jeep Gladiator which is a mid-sized truck. The Gladiator’s hardpoints are designed to support a live front axle. This is great for off-roading events such as rock crawling but can cause problems with the ride quality at highway speeds. This is not likely what mass-market customers want.

Stellantis is currently out of stock, so speculation has led to the possibility that the Ram Dakota could be unibody-designed. This could make it smaller than expected. Ford Motor Company is scrambling for orders to fulfill the Ford Maverick, a pickup truck with a unibody platform. According to this demand, downsizing to a smaller market would be a good idea. The Ram 700 is sold in Mexico to help with this goal. It was hoped that the Fiat-based unibody small truck would make its way north to the USA and Canada. But that hasn’t happened. We are left to wonder if Ram even knows Dakota’s future shape.
