2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Desert Racer – Every automotive brand that has a full-sized truck in their lineup wants a piece the Ford F-150 Raptor’s cake. Ram’s 1500 TRX is available, Chevy has added an off-road-oriented ZR2 trim for the Silverado 1500 in 2022, while GMC will add an AT4X trim for the 2022 Sierra 1500.
This segment is dominated by the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan. However, this could change as the Toyota Tundra TRD Desert Racer Tundra concept at last year’s SEMA shows may indicate that the Japanese brand intends to compete with American brands with an all-terrain vehicle.
2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Desert Racer Redesign
According to The Drive, if Toyota decides to enter Baja-truck-inspired rat racing, it will likely use the TRD Desert Racer design as a template. This includes the TRD-sourced suspension upgrades and widebody kit as well as 37-inch all-terrain tires. It is uncertain if the TRD Desert Racer’s General Tire Grabber X3 rubber, and Method Race Wheels-supplied 18 inch wheels will be approved. We are certain that Toyota will put special tires on any Tundra it makes inspired by the TRD Desert Racer.
We doubt Toyota will fit such a Tundra to a powertrain producing anywhere near the 702-hp supercharged engine in the TRX, but we believe the automaker will be able to squeeze a few more ponies out of the Tundra’s 437-hp gasoline/electric hybrid powertrain called iForce MAX. It’s unclear if this will happen via tweaks to the Tundra’s electric motor or twin-turbocharged, 3.4-liter V-6 engines, or a combination of both. It’s not surprising that a Tundra model would produce 450 horsepower. This figure is comparable to the Ford F-150 Raptor V-6’s forced induction.
Also, such a Tundra model will likely keep the TRD Desert Racer grille-mounted amber light fixtures that are required for vehicles with a certain width. This also means that future Tundras would have a similar set of red lights at its rear. However, the plethora of driving lights that were fitted to the TRD Desert Racer would likely be lost to time. We hope Toyota will offer the Tundra’s show truck with powerful driving lights as an option for all models of the Tundra, not just for the off-road version.
2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Desert Racer Produced
Toyota is keeping quiet about the production plans for the TRD Desert Racer truck concept. Only time will tell if the SEMA vehicle serves as a template to the F-150 Raptor-fighting Tundra model. It may just be a cool truck that sparks interest in aftermarket suppliers and consumers. They’ll continue to look for ways to improve on the stock of Toyota full-size pickup trucks.
