Electric Kia truck Confirmed

Kia announced at the 2022 Kia CEO Investor Day (3 March 2022) that it had restructured its long-term plan to expand its EV lineup from 11 models in 2026 to 14 by 2027. Kia confirmed that two of the three additional EVs it has on its roadmap were electric trucks (Kia electric pickup trucks). According to a report from thekoreancarblog.com, the internal codename of one of the electric trucks is ‘Kia TK.’

According to the company, one of the two Kia truck models would be an EV-only model and the other a strategic model. The latter could refer a modified internal combustion engine platform. Reports have been circulating about the Electric Hyundai Santa Cruz. This could be used to loan Kia its offering. The other truck could be a new truck designed from scratch to compete with the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck, and Ford F-150 Lightning.

Kia will launch at least two new electric vehicle models per year starting in 2023. This will allow the company to have a complete line-up of 14 electric cars by 2027. The electric pickup trucks, as well as an emerging market entry EV, are additions to the 11 EV models that were announced last year.

A report by CarsGuide.com.au in December 2021 stated that the Kia pickup truck, which is a traditional Kia truck, might not be on the manufacturer’s agenda. It is unlikely that Kia will offer a gas-engined brother product to the Hyundai Santa Cruz. This truck was the fastest-selling new truck in America in August 2021. CarsGuide interviewed Damian Meredith, Kia Australia’s COO. He said that a Kia pickup/ute is “probably a long shot” but that if Kia wanted a pickup to be launched, it would have done so by now. Given that Australia’s pickup body is the best-selling vehicle, Kia Australia pitched for one four years ago. This was due to 20 percent of total sales. Kia Australia had predicted it would sell 20,000 pickups per year in Australia.

Electric Kia truck Rumors

There are strong reasons why Kia is unable to launch a pickup at the moment. First, unlike Santa Cruz’s unibody platform, the pickup Kia is targeting Australia needs ruggedness and 4WD capability. Competitors include the ladder-frame Toyota Hilux and the ardent Ford Ranger. Kia doesn’t have a ladder frame chassis and the only ladder-frame product it sells, Kia Mojave, is left-hand driven and an older product. Santa Cruz used a monocoque to sell the Santa Cruz for the lifestyle segment. It would be a good fit in a market like the U.S. But, Kia will be criticized in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa where customers prefer the sturdy ladder-frame chassis.
